Iran Grants Strait of Hormuz Passage Exemption to India, China, Iraq and Qatar

Iran has exempted ships from India, China, Iraq and Qatar from Strait of Hormuz restrictions. The move comes as Tehran considers Qatar's mediation proposal amid fears of renewed military confrontation with the United States.

Iran has announced an exemption allowing ships from India, China, Iraq and Qatar to pass through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, even as tensions with the United States remain high and the possibility of renewed military confrontation continues to concern Tehran. The announcement comes amid a political setback for US President Donald Trump, whose Republican Party suffered a blow in the American midterm elections as the opposition Democratic Party strengthened its position in both houses of Congress.

According to the Iranian government, ships from India have been exempted from the restrictions imposed on maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The exemption also applies to vessels from China, Iraq and Qatar. This means ships belonging to these four countries will be allowed to use the crucial maritime route without restrictions imposed by Iran.

Ahmad Hayat-Moghaddam, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, disclosed the decision on Tuesday. Speaking at a meeting convened to review the country's economic and security situation, he confirmed that Iran had granted passage exemptions to the four countries.

Explaining the decision concerning India, Hayat-Moghaddam said the exemption would help Iran import medicines. Regarding China, he said the decision was intended to secure political support. He also pointed out that trade with China provides economic benefits to Iran.

Qatar's Mediation Gains Importance Amid Possible US-Iran Confrontation

They are advocating a positive consideration of a proposal brought forward through Qatar's mediation.

The report states that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi have urged the military leadership to consider Qatar's proposal positively. The proposal is aimed at bringing the ongoing conflict with the United States to an end.

Qatar's Envoys Reach Tehran to Seek Iran's Final Response

According to the report, Qatari representatives recently travelled to Tehran, Iran's capital, to obtain the country's official and final response to the proposed agreement. Their objective was not to engage in prolonged discussions but to secure a definitive answer from the Iranian leadership on the proposal.

However, Iran's military leadership remains sceptical about the prospects of maintaining peace with the United States. While political leaders are pushing for negotiations to reduce tensions, military strategists continue to take the possibility of another confrontation with the US military seriously.

Iran's decision to exempt ships from India, China, Iraq and Qatar from Strait of Hormuz restrictions comes alongside these diplomatic efforts, highlighting the importance of maritime access, economic considerations and regional mediation as Tehran weighs its options amid tensions with Washington.
